,The shingle above my door reads //Jonathan J. Duck, Detective//. Below that is a line of smaller text that reads //Will find anything or anyone. Prices are negotiable.//
That sums me up in a nutshell. I go where others won't go or are too afraid to go. No case is too small or [[too big->intro]].
Unfortunately, I'd put the sign up yesterday, but no one came looking for help. I guess woodland creatures don't need much detective help.
I'll give it [[another day->daytwo]].The next day was a bust too. Maybe my Mom was right. Maybe I should find a nice [[hen]] and settle down near the boardwalk.
I'll give it [[another day->daythree]].I was eating my lunch of berries and dead flies when Mrs. Mole entered my hole. She peered at me over the rotten log that served as my desk. Her eyes were reddish. It might have been from crying or [[she might not have been used to the light->molelight]].
"Mr. Duck, I need your help," she said.

Mrs. Mole sniffled before she continued. "Today, I decided it was time to clean our burrow. I didn't want the children to be underfoot, so I told them to go outside and play. After I finished cleaning the bedrooms, I went outside to check on them and they were gone. I was going to look for them, but then I remembered that you are good at finding thinks. Could you look for them while I finish cleaning?"
I [[swallowed a mouthful of sand->sand-fact]] from the pile next to the log before I answered.

I decided to head out and start looking. I had just stepped out when I heard someone calling me. It was Mr. Sparrow and he was upset.
"Mr. Duck, I need you," he said.
"What can I do for you?" I said.
"Mrs. Sparrow is visiting her family and I had to watch the [[littles->littlesfact]]. I took a nap after lunch and now they're gone. Can you help me find them?"

"Before you go, Mr. Sparrow, I'd like to ask you a question. Where would your littles like to go?"
"That's easy," he said. "They like to visit the pond, the thicket, and the hollow. Anything else?"
"No," I said.
With that, he was gone. [[At least, now I had a couple of places to look->decisions]].Sparrows mostly eat seeds and grains. They also eat berries, insects, and flower buds.

[[Back to the office->trip-back]]Walked back to the office dejected. I'd looked in the most likely places for the littles would be, but had no luck. What a great detective I am. I was going to tell my first clients that I had failed them.
I was passing near the south woods when I heard someone calling me.
"Hey, Ducky. Here, Ducky, Ducky."
I turned to see the fox from the thicket trotting after me.

I continued to [[RUN->run2]].My lungs were exploding and my heart was flying out of my chest. I need to get out and exercise more.
I couldn't move anymore and flopped down into a pile.
The fox was on me in a second.
"Come on. Do it. Put me out of my misery. Promise me that you'll take big bites," I panted.
The fox stood over me for a minute before answering.
"I'm not going to eat you, Ducky. I heard that you were looking for some littles. Is that right?"
I nodded.
"Well, I seen them over by the new [[contruction site->contruction]] in the south woods."After I caught my breath (and thanking the fox) I headed for the south woods to look for a construction site.
Sure enough, the humans were building some homes and using heavy machinery.
On top of that, I found the missing littles watching the construction. When I told them that their parents were looking for them, they all hurried home.
Several days later, Mrs. Mole dropped off some insects at my office as payment. It took Mr. Sparrow a couple of weeks to show up with payment, but what do you expect.
At least, I have a couple of cases under my belt. Everyone will take me seriously now. I hope.
